I get sore from walking. What should I do?

First, consider whether there are any underlying health conditions that may attribute to muscle soreness. When in doubt, consult a healthcare provider. In general, however, like other physical activity, soreness can sometimes arise from "overdoing" it. Just like other types of physical activity, by building the length of time and the intensity of the activity over time, a body becomes accustomed to more walking. For example, many people are not able to comfortably walk one mile.

By starting with shorter distances and gradually increasing the distance over time, walking further becomes easier. Stretching muscles gently after walking can also ease the severity of muscle soreness or prevent it altogether.
