In June of 1999, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) was established with funding from the US Department of Transportation to connect communities with the information and resources they need to create safe places for walking and bicycling. The Center is a program of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) in cooperation with the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP). Major accomplishments of the PBIC include:
- Series of award-winning web sites (Planetizen Top 10 Websites List, 2006 Edition)
- Responses to approximately 6,000 questions/requests for information per year
- Participation in state, national and international meetings and conferences
- Various training courses and workshops
- Organization and support of Walk to School activities at approximately 3,000 schools
- National and international Walk to School web sites (now operated by the National Center for Safe Routes to School)
- Technical tools, resources and reports (e.g., PEDSAFE, BIKESAFE, Safe Routes to School web-based Guide, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool [PBCAT], etc.)
