Case Study No. 17: Bicycle and Pedestrian Policies and Programs in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand

The report looks most closely at the experience of Japan and Australia, the two most affluent countries in the region. This study suggests that across societies, the variation in the use of bicycling and wlaking modes cannot be well explained by income, climate, and the level of motorization, although clearly these have some effect. How these modes are perceived socially, how safe people feel walking and cycling, and particularly, the character of land use and urban design, and transportation pricing, all appear to play greater roles in determining the level of walking and cycling.
