Bicycling Boom in Germany

A Revival Engineered by Public Policy

This article examines the dramatic boom in bicycling in Germany from the mid 1970s to the mid 1990s. A wide range of transport, land use, and taxation policies contributed to the growth in cycling at a time that car ownership and use was also increasing. The article highlights the key role of public policies in promoting cycling.
