Source: Transportation Research Board Institute of Medicine of the National Academies

The built environment can be studied at various geographic scales -- from the building and site to the neighborhood and regional levels. The focus of this study is primarily at the latter two levels; very little is known about physical activity at the building or site level. For the purposes of this study, physical activity is categorized into four types: leisure time or recreational, transportation, household, and occupational. The committee's interest is in the effect of the built environment on overall physical activity because health perspective, not whether an individual drives rather than walks or cycles on particular trips.
