In June 2009, the Partnership for Sustainable Communities was formed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These three agencies have pledged to ensure that housing and transportation goals are met while simultaneously protecting the
environment, promoting equitable development, and helping to address the challenges of climate change.

This guide to federal programs is intended to help communities identify resources available to support their efforts to promote sustainable and livable communities by:

  • Providing more transportation choices,
  • Promoting equitable, affordable housing,
  • Enhancing economic competitiveness,
  • Supporting existing communities,
  • Coordinating and leveraging federal policies and investment, and
  • Valuing communities and neighborhoods.
