Cambridge Street Code: Rules and Etiquette for Getting There Together

Source: City of Cambridge, Community Development Department

The City of Cambridge developed the Street Code to remind street users that in order for the transportation system to function well, each person must follow the rules, pay attention, and be patient and courteous.

In addition to presenting the rules of the road for all modes, this resource also includes visuals with instructions for:

  • Two-stage left-turn street markings, bike boxes, and separated bike lanes;
  • Safety around buses and large trucks;
  • Drivers to open car doors with their far hand (Dutch Reach) and people riding bicycles to ride outside the door zone (to prevent dooring crashes); and
  • Shared path etiquitte.
