Resources for State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinators
State Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinators have diverse responsibilities across different States, but their primary objective is to improve safety and accessibility of active transportation for pedestrians, bicyclists, and people using micromobility, assistive devices, and transit. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) enacted by Congress in 1991, mandates that each State appoint a Coordinator dedicated to bicycle and pedestrian programs and projects within its State DOT. State Coordinators receive support and resources from the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC).
