An Evaluation of High-Visibility Crosswalk Treatment

Clearwater, Florida
Source: Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

One aspect of the field data collection effort was to determine if pedestrians were more likely to cross where there was an illuminated overhead crosswalk sign and ladder crosswalk markings. A second aspect of the study was to determine if drivers would yield more often to pedestrians using this novel pedestrian facility. A third aspect of the study was to determine if pedestrians use more, less, or the same amount of caution as well as whether they cross more aggressively, forcing drivers to yield. Nighttime observation sessions were conducted in order to better evaluate the effectiveness of the illuminated overhead crosswalk sign.
