Proven Safety Countermeasures in Rural Communities

Source: Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)

The FHWA released a report identifying 28 Proven Safety Countermeasures (PSCs) for rural communities, focusing on implementing the Safe System approach. The PSCs aim to prevent fatal and serious injury crashes in rural road networks, where 43 percent of all roadway deaths occur. The report covers crosscutting PSCs like speed management, intersection improvements, and lighting, along with measures specifically targeting pedestrian and bicyclist safety, such as crosswalk visibility and road diets.
