Intersection Operation Strategies for Improving Pedestrian Safety

May 15, 2024

Creating a safer roadway network consistent with the Safe System Approach requires managing time, space, and speeds between all users. This is especially important at signalized intersections, where conflicts must be carefully managed, particularly between pedestrians and vehicles. Making it safer for people to cross signalized intersections involves using different signal timing and operational strategies, such as timing signals for speed management, leading pedestrian intervals, left-turn provisions, and rest on red.

During this webinar, panelists from State and local agencies will share insights about operational strategies at signalized intersections that benefit pedestrian safety. After an introduction from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), panelists from the City of Lakewood, Colorado, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the City of Portland, Oregon will share their experiences and lessons learned. Following their presentations, panelists will respond to questions from attendees during a facilitated discussion period.

This webinar will be delivered jointly through the FHWA Pedestrian and Bicycle and Intersections Focused Approach programs.
