Improving Pedestrian Safety Through Vehicle Design and Technology

Apr 17, 2025

The design of motor vehicles can influence the likelihood of a crash involving a pedestrian as well as the severity and type of injuries sustained in a crash. The changing size and shape of motor vehicles has had a clear impact on pedestrian safety, though advancements in vehicle technology may lead to improved detection and reaction to crossing pedestrians. As these issues are examined through research, findings can help transportation professionals identify vehicle design and technology changes that can reduce the risk of pedestrian deaths and injuries. This webinar will showcase important research about vehicle design and technology conducted by the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the American Automobile Association (AAA). Following their presentations, panelists will participate in a facilitated discussion and respond to questions.
